My top seven all time favorite OPM Christmas songs

Gee whiz, how fast time flies.  It only seemed yesterday that we celebrated the coming of the new year and now the cheeriest time of the year is only just around the corner.  The thoughts of it makes you feel warm and nice, doesn't it?  And you also know how we Filipinos celebrates Christmas, the grandest and the longest too.

Christmas is fun and as always, music is a big part of the tradition.  Be it old carols or new favorites, the music always serves as a healthy reminder of who we are as Christians and as a nation, where we came from and what our aspirations are.

So without further ado, here are now the compilation of my top seven all time favorite OPM Christmas songs.

Christmas in our hearts by Jose Mari Chan
This song was released in November 1990.  It was a big hit way back then and until the present times, it's always a must play song for the Yuletide celebrations.  I remember we were always singing this song in our school's Christmas program almost every year.

The song is all about having positive out look in life, hope, giving and sharing.  It also reminds us that we should not forget Jesus Christ and let him have center stage in our lives not only every Christmas but throughout the entire year. [ Listen to the song here ]

A Perfect Christmas by Jose Mari Chan
Also released in November 1990.  There is something about this song that whenever I hear it, I feel nostalgic.  Felt like I was walking down the cold city streets looking for somebody... It's just weird lol

This is a sweet song about missing or longing for someone special.  That feeling of how you'd wished you get to spend your whole life with him/her. [ Listen to the song here ]

Pasko na Sinta ko by Gary Valenciano
This song was released in 1996.  I really love the soulful voice of Mr. Gary V here.  It adds to the emotional impact of the song.  I don't know, but I have a bitter-sweet feeling towards this song.  Am I missing someone? naah!

This is a very sentimental song about missing someone special.  That "feeling of loss" the song is trying to convey to its listener is quite depressing.  So if you're a bit feeling low on Christmas day, I wouldn't recommend this song for you.  Not unless you're a bit of a masochist lol [ Listen to the song here ]

Sa Araw ng Pasko by All Star Cast
This song became one of my favorite when it was released in 1997?  I really can't recall the exact date it was actually first released. So please forgive me.

Christmas is very important to the Filipino culture.  Even though one of the family member is in a far away distance, let say is working abroad, they would still make a way to make their celebration worth special. And this song is all about that - strong family ties. [ Listen to the song here ]

Pasko sa Pinas by Yeng Constantino
This song was composed by Yeng Constantino when she was still one of the so called "scholars" inside the Pinoy Dream Academy.  It was released in December of 2006.

This is a very cheerful song best describing Christmas celebrations, the unique Filipino way.  Christmas in the Philippines is the best and incomparable to any other cultures in the world.  The song has full of positive vibes and I love how Yeng played with the melody. [ Listen to the song here ]

Christmas won't be the same without you, a cover song by Martin Nievera
Just like the Pasko na Sinta ko above, this is another sad and very sentimental song but I love it.  I'm a fan of Martin Nievera's songs.  This one tackles about a dearly beloved who were not on your side anymore.  Whenever the Christmas time starts to kicks in, you can't help but to remember the sweet memories you once had with him/her. Star ng Pasko by Kapamilya Stars
The song was released in 2009 and was dedicated to all the victims of Typhoon Ondoy which brought massive flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces on September 26 of the same year.

It is a very positive, moving and powerful song.  The message its trying to convey is a very clear one - to never give up no matter what hardships you had been through.  Always smile and help those in great need.  And remember that there is a God above.  He is always there for us, ready to extend a helping a hand.  We just have to look up to Him and ask for help.
